Safe E-Mail and Blogging
Safe blogging during your job search
Blogging is an activity many people enjoy for a variety of reasons. It allows them to express themselves creatively, share their thoughts and ideas with others, and generally stay in touch with friends, family, and general readers. Sometimes, however, the information shared in blogs is not about things those bloggers would necessarily want potential employers to know.
If you regularly blog there is no reason to give it up, but there is good reason to be careful about the content of future entries and review the content of past entries. Remember, even if you think your blog is private, it is not. It can be copied, forwarded, or linked in many different ways, meaning the content can quickly spread far and away beyond your control. What's more, blogs and other online information is captured and archived by search engines, and often kept for quite a long time.
Check for online information about yourself
Before launching your job search, it's a good idea to do your own check for online information about yourself. Using several different search engines (Google, MSN, Yahoo, etc.), search for your name and see what results come back. It's also a good idea to search using your e-mail address and blog name as well.
If you find something you wouldn't want a potential employer to see, and it's on your own personal website, remove it immediately. If it is on a website controlled by someone else, write that person a letter (the old fashioned kind, not an e-mail) to request removal of those contents. Once content has been removed from an active web page, it may take up to several months for it to disappear from search engines. There are literally billions of pages for each engine to update regularly, so naturally it takes some time. Finally, if you cannot have worrisome content removed, or if you will be job searching before it can be removed, be prepared to answer questions about it if a potential employer brings it up. Your explanation should be honest, straightforward, and to the point; from there you can move on and re-focus the potential employer's on other information more relevant to your job qualifications.
