Relocating
Relocating for a job is both exciting and stressful. It adds yet another layer of pressure and complexity to the already higher pressures of starting and becoming comfortable with a new job. With a bit of planning and awareness, however, you can minimize the stress of relocating and ease your transition into a new life in a new place.
Do your homework
The first step in any relocation is to do your homework about the new area. This means learning about the weather and climate, traffic, shopping, schools, neighborhoods, entertainment, restaurants, commuting, traffic, and all of the other things that contribute to and affect your daily life. A good place to start is with the daily newspaper in the city where you will relocate; make a point of reading it every day, whether on the internet or by actually subscribing to it before you move.
Cost of living is another major issue to consider before relocating. If you haven't already taken this into account, use one of the many cost of living calculators available online to estimate how the cost of living in the new location compares to where you are now. Remember, though, the results you get back are just estimates; use them only as guidelines, not as confirmed facts. You should also look at things like the cost of groceries, gas for your car, utilities, telephone service, and the like.
You should always make a point of visiting the new location at least twice before moving there. It may be easiest to go on the weekend when you have more time, but it's a good idea to go on a regular weekday as well. This will allow you to get a sense of daily traffic patterns, the general rhythm of the area, and such.
Deciding where to live
Perhaps the biggest decision you will make when relocating is where to live. If you are single, you only need to consider your own personal needs. However, if you are married and/or have children, you have the additional complication of balancing all of their needs as well.
Think about your lifestyle and the elements you feel are most important. Do you prefer to be in an urban environment with plenty of access to arts, culture, and nightlife? Are you more interested in a suburban lifestyle where you and your family are close to schools, other families, and family-oriented activities? Or do you want some combination of these and other factors?
These are very important considerations, because if you choose to live in an area that doesn't fit your lifestyle preferences you will likely be unhappy and face even more stress than normal during relocation. Many people prefer to rent a place to live, such as an apartment, duplex, or house, before committing to buy a place to live. This allows them to get to know their new city a little bit better, helping to ensure they buy a home in the area that best meets their needs.
